In the city of Chiang Mai there is a supermarket that tries to reduce the consumption of plastic. That’s why they use banana/banana leaves as packaging for all kinds of vegetables, which they sell on their shelves. One leaf is enough to group stalks of celery, spinach, peppers and so on.

Rimping Supermarket say they realized that it is not enough to use products that are easy to recycle. On the contrary, those plastics are not so easily recycled, even if they are separated into special containers. Recycling costs money and is not always the best option.

But when you use a packaging material like banana leaf, the benefits are many. It’s not a product that you have to separate to recycle, you can use the sheet to make compost or throw it away without any problem. The leaf will decompose naturally in a few months. This is not the case with plastics.

In addition, banana leaves are abundant, and trees are not damaged when they are cut. In addition, vegetables look very well wrapped in leaves. In fact, I’d say they look even more attractive. The texture of the banana leaf makes the colors of the vegetables stand out.

Vegetable packaging made with banana leaves

The use of leaves is not something new, it has been done for many years. What is unprecedented in this case is that a supermarket chain applies it to some of its products.

The supermarket benefited from the use of leaves instead of plastic bags, thanks to someone sharing photographs of the packaging on social networks. It became viral, and now people go to the supermarket in search of those vegetables.

It may be an idea to be copied in several supermarkets around the world. It doesn’t matter that they do it just for the sake of attention, because somehow the environment would end up benefiting. It would no longer be so polluted with single-use plastics.
